Chitosan
Chitosan is a new and revolutionary weight loss product on
the market, which works by inhibiting the absorption of fat
from food.
Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide produced commercially
by deacetylation of chitlin, the structural element in the
exoskeleton of crustaceans such as shrimp or crabs. It is
positively charged and soluble, so it acts as a kind of biological
adhesive and binds readily to negatively charged surfaces
such as mucous membranes, which makes it ideally suited to
soak up substances such as fats.
When taken with food, chitosan can absorb up to ten times
its own weight in fat, converting it into a kind of gel that
renders it unable to be digested. Because of its positive
ionic charge, chitosan naturally attracts negatively charged
fats which are then also rendered indigestible. The trapped
fat passes harmlessly through the digestive system and is
excreted as though it were never there. The combined calorific
value then of the chitosan and accumulated fat is effectively
zero.
Additionally, because the body is not taking in any fat,
it will be inclined to burn existing fat stores, and accommodate
to this new diet, potential correcting eating patterns and
stabilizing metabolic rate.
Recent studies are showing that by simply adding vitamin
C to the equation, the effectiveness of chitosan can be doubled
due to citric acid swelling the fibres of the chitosan. In
one report, test subjects lost 8% of their body weight in
just four weeks, an incredible achievement.
One or two capsules are recommended to be taken before each
meal, and the importance of drinking plenty of water is stressed,
as the chitosan adds fibre which will need to be washed down,
and which also has a cleansing effect on the digestive system,
further aiding the absorption of fat by the chitosan fibres.
There are no known side effects of taking chitosan, although
due to its composition it should not be taken by pregnant
women or those allergic to seafood. As a natural fibre, rather
than a drug, it is extremely low toxicity and therefore perfectly
safe.
If you have trouble controlling your weight, try chitosan
as part of a balanced exercise and nutrition programme, and
